Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology uses OCR lenses to reshape the cornea while you sleep – meaning sharp, clear vision all day without contact lenses or glasses.

OCR (Overnight Corneal Reshaping) lenses are special contact lenses that gently flatten the cornea to allow the eye to see clearly without correction. This is also known as Accelerated Orthokeratology (AOK). These lenses work to control myopia, mild astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia.

MYOPIA – WHAT IS IT, AND HOW CAN OVERNIGHT CORNEAL RESHAPING HELP?

Myopia, also known as “near-sighted” or “short-sighted”, is a progressive visual disorder that results in poor distance vision. If the myopia is severe, it will impair near vision as well.  In addition to weakening vision, it also changes the physical structure of the eye. It can steepen the front surface of the eye (cornea) and/or stretch the retina (axial elongation). These changes increase the risk of future eye disease. It is one of the leading causes of blindness around the world and has a direct association with retinal detachments and glaucoma.

In the most basic of terms Overnight Corneal Reshaping or Orthokeratology is the science of changing the curvature or shape of the cornea to change how light is focused on the retina at the back of one’s eye. It has been demonstrated, within a ten year time frame, that fully 70% of all participants in a corneal reshaping control group did not progress in degree of myopia over the period studied.
