Masks and Fogging Glasses
Face masks are becoming increasingly common, with the BC CDC recommending that masks are a “good option in situations where you cannot keep a safe distance from others for an extended period of time.” Most people with glasses have now found that lenses fogging up is an issue. This happens because your warm breath comes through the top of the mask and hits the cooler lenses, causing a troublesome fog.
Some tips to reduce the fog:
1. Make sure your mask fits correctly. Your mask should fit snug enough that your breath does not escape through the top. A nose wire or moldable material can help keep a mask snug to the bridge of your nose, preventing most of the hot air that will fog up the lenses.
2. Use a piece of tissue under the mask, across the bridge of your nose to fill the gap. Again this will prevent hot breath from reaching the cool lenses and reduce some of the fogging that happens.
3. Warm water and soap can help! We put this one to the test with Dawn dish soap and the results were surprising. Lather up your lenses with mild soap and warm water, rinse it off and leave to dry on the counter or use a microfiber cloth to dry. The soap leaves behind a thin film that acts as a fog barrier.
4. Adjust your glasses – by either moving them slightly down your nose to create more space for air flow or by sealing the mask with your glasses. Make sure your glasses are outside of your mask for best results. Both options are not ideal for optics but if other options aren’t working for you this might help in a pinch.
